Education to Careers (ETC) is the
educational component of the Illinois workforce preparation system
that seeks to prepare all learners with the skills needed in high
skill, high-wage jobs. Illinois is using ETC-building efforts
to support fundamental reform efforts at the K-12 educational
programming levels. While ETC builds on the experiences and successes
of vocational education, TechPrep, and youth apprenticeship, it
is different in a number of key aspects:
- It is intended for ALL students, not just those who plan to
join the workforce upon leaving high school
- It is not a program or set of programs, but rather a system
that unites community resources with all educational initiatives.
- It addresses eight key elements including academic standards
and integrated curricula, which connect school and the workplace
The Professional Development Alliance offers three training modules designed to introduce educators
in grades 5-9 to the ETC curriculum. They are designed to be engaged
and integrated with the Illinois State Standards, computer and
internet exploration, and applicable as independent lessons or
as part of a unit.
