Education to Careers (ETC) is the educational component of the Illinois workforce preparation system that seeks to prepare all learners with the skills needed in high skill, high-wage jobs. Illinois is using ETC-building efforts to support fundamental reform efforts at the K-12 educational programming levels. While ETC builds on the experiences and successes of vocational education, TechPrep, and youth apprenticeship, it is different in a number of key aspects:

  1. It is intended for ALL students, not just those who plan to join the workforce upon leaving high school
  2. It is not a program or set of programs, but rather a system that unites community resources with all educational initiatives.
  3. It addresses eight key elements including academic standards and integrated curricula, which connect school and the workplace

The Professional Development Alliance offers three training modules designed to introduce educators in grades 5-9 to the ETC curriculum. They are designed to be engaged and integrated with the Illinois State Standards, computer and internet exploration, and applicable as independent lessons or as part of a unit.
