The common core standards will require shifts in teaching practice. This set of three modules will address these six shifts. Focusing on two shifts for each module, these workshops are designed as stand alone classes or as a block of three for one hour credit (see course #120620G-1). All are designed to give teachers the research and understanding behind the shifts but mostly to present practical "I can use tomorrow" ideas for classroom practice.
Module three will address the shifts of (5.) Complexity of Text and (6.) Academic Vocabulary. Participants will learn how to figure complexity of text. They will also learn key instructional practices for both literature and informational text: How can you blend reading literature and reading informational text so that the passages support each other and create schema for the reader? How can students present what they know by speaking or using technology? How can we conduct comprehension conversations? Activities will include creating lapbooks and technology connections to reading and research.
Includes continental breakfast and lunch.
