TREP-ROE Counselor Workshop
Start Date: Fri, Oct 26, 2018 8:00 am - 3:30 pm Workshop #: 181026W-1
Presenter(s): Laura Price

Room 6 - Professional Development Alliance, 2705 McDonough St., Joliet, IL 60436 (View Map)
Date Summary:   1 Session on 10/26/2018.

Counselors are invited to learn about the local career options for students, including what local business defines as "entry-level" and "career-ready." The counselor workshop connects school counselors with human resource executives to examine local career pathways, hiring practices, such as the schools that business actively recruit students, and the critical skills sets needed for employment across a variety of entry points. Site visits combined with breakout sessions construct an understanding of local opportunities and the local job market, and provide counselors with a set of student employability tips. Aligning educational choices with viable employment options broadens student options and opportunities for success.

The state education standards states "college and career ready," but readiness is more than a test score. This readiness requires a combination of academic attributes and skills with a plethora of non-cognitive "soft" skills. Moreover, different careers have different expectations for readiness-one size does NOT fit all. While PARCC focuses on measuring students' critical-thinking, problem solving and communication skills to assess "college and career readiness," this workshop provides counselors an opportunity to place the scores in perspective to their students and the local job market.
Light breakfast and lunch included.
