Principal-Teacher Evaluator Retraining

NEW EVALUATION SYSTEMS PROVIDE ILLINOIS EDUCATORS GREATER SUPPORT

In 2010, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA), which changed how teachers’ and principals’ performance is measured in the state. The new evaluation systems in Illinois school districts will combine multiple measures of student growth and professional practice. The evaluations will be based on standards of effective teaching, with evaluators trained and prequalified to conduct observations, collect evidence, and provide helpful feedback in a timely way. Hand-in-hand with the new evaluations, school systems will be expected to strengthen their professional development offerings so that educators get the support they need to help their students improve.

State Retraining Requirements and Timelines

What are state retraining requirements? Retraining requirements will be met through the Administrator Academy structure. Teachers, ROE/ISC personnel, and administrators can all access retraining, so you should anticipate there will be varying levels of experience and needs within each group you train. A teacher evaluator must complete two Administrator Academies to meet retraining requirements. A principal evaluator must complete two Administrator Academies to meet retraining requirements. An individual who is both a teacher and principal evaluator must complete three Administrator Academies. Academies can be taken in any order. They do not have to be taken together.

Quick Reference for Performance Evaluation Qualifications

An individual is qualified to conduct performance evaluations after completing the initial training.
The initial qualification is valid through the end of the individual's next 5-year license cycle. To retain the evaluator  qualification credential, the individual must successfully complete evaluator re-training prior to
